Young Drummer of the Year 2009

Telford & Wrekin Music hosted Young Drummer 2009 raising the aspirations of young drummers throughout the region. Ten finalists were selected from hundreds of applicants and each one gave an outstanding demonstration of their technical ability, musicality and dynamic passion for drumming. The standard was very high and the judges, all experienced professional drummers, had the unenviable task of selecting a winner.

Sponsored by Telford Culture Zone, the final was a spectacular occasion in front of a full house at Oakengates Theatre in Telford. The young drummers amazed the audience, their peers and the judges who included Bob Henrit (The Kinks), Ralph Salmins (Madonna, Robbie Williams), Cherisse Osei (Mika) and Troy Miller (Amy Winehouse). The very best of young drumming talent from all over the UK assembled to thrash out fantastic rhythms in an electric atmosphere. The winner has since performed on national television and in addition to the great prizes and opportunities to play with international recording artists.

Quotes:
The standard of the drumming was incredible proving once again that the event (Young Drummer of the Year) showcases the amazing talent in the UK and provides the ideal platform for a career in the music industry’.
Troy Miller, Judge & Drummer with Amy Winehouse

Within two day of winning, my life has changed, I have been on national telly and radio and have been doing interviews for magazines and newspapers, I am being taken seriously as a drummer and it’s fantastic, this is my dream come true’.
Richard Rayner, Winner - Young Drummer of the Year 2009
