This is our three year Music Education Development Plan up to 2012/13, which aims to develop, enhance and expand the music education offer within Telford & Wrekin through a child centred approach.

This plan has a number of core themes running through it:-

  • To develop a uniform level of music education provision across the Borough, providing a number of universal opportunities including:-
  • By 2011 all primary schools will be offered Telford & Wrekin Music’s Music 2 the 4 programme which provides whole class music lessons at Key Stage 2 for a whole academic year.
  • Providing free music instrumental lessons and instrumental hire for those pupils on free school meals.
  • Developing and enhancing the music offer within the Telford Find Your Talent pathfinder and Telford Culture Zone.

To provide targeted support to address gaps and inequalities within the music education provision, such as building confidence and the skill sets of teachers, working with special needs schools and young people at risk, including children in care.

  • The development of a partnership with the Telford & Wrekin Youth Offending Team
  • To provide opportunities for workforce development.
  • Strive towards developing models of best practice

To provide and develop co-ordination and overview, bringing together all strands and giving them parity; out of school, curriculum, Gifted and Talented, community music.

  • Providing a progressive pathway for all children and young people
  • Development of a commissioning framework for music education provision in Telford, based on local needs and outcomes, as part of the Telford Find Your Talent development work and a multi agency approach to working
  • The development of networks and sharing of information and resources.
  • Active promotion of Telford & Wrekin’s music offer as part of the wider work around the cultural offer.
  • To deliver against the Telford & Wrekin Children Services Plan and the five Every Child Matters outcomes.

“Music and culture as a whole lie at the heart of the Every Child Matters/ Youth Matters vision”. By 2011, this development plan aims to deliver the following three outcomes:-

  • Children and young people enjoy and achieve with their music making
  • Children and young people feel safe participating in music activities that also support their healthy lifestyles
  • Children and young people make a positive contribution to their local community in and through music activities.
